Chevy van - The Van of Choice

Written by Matsuko Kouda

World class car manufacturer, Chevrolet, has never stopped producing quality automobiles since it was first established by Louis Chevrolet and GM founder, William Durant, in 1911. Since then, Chevrolet has stamped the automobile industry with its famous bowtie logo and has served and satisfied millions of motorists worldwide. Expanding its dominance in the industry, Chevrolet extended its territory by introducing the Chevy van in the 1960’s.

Released in 1961 under the name of Chevrolet-Corvair, the first Chevy van was the Chevrolet Greenbrier, also known as CorVan. Inspired by the German-made Volkswagen Bus, the CorVan utilized a flat-6 opposed rear engine with its own cooling system. The production of the Chevrolet Greenbrier was halted in 1964 and was immediately followed by the first generation Chevrolet vans that were in production from 1964 to 1966.

The G-Series S10 vans make up the first generation of Chevrolet vans. All through the 1960s, Chevy produced a range of vans, upgrading each model with refined features and better engine performance than the previous ones. The Handi-Van, Sport-Van, and the Handi-Bus were designed to meet the demand for compact vans merged with the concept of passenger cars, and to compete with other van manufacturers such as Ford and Dodge. The second and third generations of Chevrolet vans followed in the late 1960s through the early 1970s. These vans were modified with a more powerful V8 engine, better suspension, auto-transmission, and power breaks.

Today, the newest addition to the range of Chevrolet vans is the 2009 Chevrolet Express Passenger Van. This Chevy van tops the list of consumer-choice vans with its passenger capacities, amazing performance, and pleasant riding experience – three qualities that continue to make Chevrolet vehicles the brand of choice.
